Show Me for Emergencies is a research-driven, cost-free communication tool designed to facilitate interactions between public health officials or emergency responders and individuals who may have difficulties with hearing, speaking, or comprehension. It employs a set of intuitive icons that enable effective two-way communication in high-pressure situations.
The icon set supports emergency personnel in posing questions and providing clear, visual instructions. Conversely, it offers individuals with communication challenges a means to express their preferences, medical or personal needs, emotional states, and daily essentials. Additionally, detailed icons depicting physical appearance can assist personnel at Family Reunification or Family Assistance Centers in gathering critical information efficiently.
Key features include:
- Approximately 300 communication icons
- Ability to translate icons into 13 different languages
- A notepad function allowing text-based communication
- Offline functionality, enabling use without mobile network or WiFi
- The option to star specific icons for personalized icon sets
The tool was developed by the Office of Preparedness and Emergency Management within the Massachusetts Department of Public Health.
